Gym Dogs Cap Perfect Season
National gymnastics title is Georgia's seventh

April 22, 2006

CORVALLIS, Ore.---The Gym Dogs completed a perfect season at the Women's Gymnastics Championships on Friday night with a score of 197.75, the team's highest since winning last year's national title.
For Georgia (36-0) it is the second time in program history to complete back-to-back NCAA championship seasons (also in 1998-99) and the fourth time to finish undefeated. Georgia is the only program in NCAA history with an undefeated national title season.
To win the title Georgia had to outlast second-place Utah (196.8) and Alabama (196.725), which both put up impressive performances. The Gym Dogs only led the Crimson Tide by .025 entering the final rotation.
Florida (196.275) placed fourth followed by Nebraska (196.175) and Iowa State (194.725).
"I want to first congratulate Alabama and Utah," said Georgia head coach Suzanne Yoculan. "I love the fact that they came after us. We had to perform tonight and have our best meet to win - and that's what we did. They were right on our heels the whole way.
"This team is very special. We set a goal at the beginning of the year to go undefeated. I'm so proud to have this national title and the fourth undefeated season. It just shows the work ethic and focus this team had. It was a total team effort," Yoculan said.
It was the vaulting event in the final rotation that helped the Gym Dogs pull away at the end of the competition. The team score of 49.65 is the highest in at least three years. In that rotation Courtney Kupets (9.975) and Kelsey Ericksen (9.95) had career highs while Megan Dowlen (9.875) tied her career best in the leadoff spot. Tiffany Tolnay had a 9.95 as the anchor and Katie Heenan and Ashley Kupets added a 9.9 and 9.85, respectively.
Georgia started the night by tying its season high on the uneven bars of 49.475 which it set in a meet at Auburn on Feb. 24. Ericksen tied her season best of 9.95, Heenan scored a 9.925 and Courtney Kupets had a 9.9. Nikki Childs and Tolnay finished with a pair of 9.85s.
In Georgia's second rotation, the team fought off a fall in the first spot of the order to score a 49.2. Courtney Kupets led the Gym Dogs with a 9.95, tying her career high for the second consecutive night. Heenan anchored with a 9.9. Tolnay scored a 9.85 and Childs had a 9.8, while Audrey Bowers posted a 9.7.
When all teams had completed two events Georgia trailed Alabama 98.775 - 98.675. Alabama started its meet on the floor and vault.
On the floor the Gym Dogs moved into the lead by .025 over Alabama with a score of 49.425. Ericksen was the high scorer with a career-high 9.95 and Courtney Kupets had a 9.925. Ashley Kupets tied her season high at 9.9 and Abby Stack finished with a 9.85. Tiffany Tolnay rounded out the five counting scores with a 9.8.
Courtney Kupets was the high all-arounder for the second consecutive night with a score of 39.75. Courtney's vault score (9.975) was also a meet high and she tied for first on the balance beam with Utah's Ashley Postell at 9.95. Ericksen won the bars and floor events.

Athens, Ga. ---  Georgia reserved their spot at the NCAA Championships with a win at the NCAA Southeast Regional with a final score of 197.425 at Stegeman Coliseum in front of 7,196.  It is the 23rd consecutive year that the Gym Dogs will advance to the championships.  No. 12-ranked Nebraska finished in second place 196.350 and will also travel to the NCAA Championships.  Emily Parsons tied with Georgia's Kelsey Ericksen as the top all-arounders at 39.500.
No. 13-ranked Missouri finished third with a 195.325, followed by No. 23 North Carolina (194.300), North Carolina State (193.925) and West Virginia tied for fifth place. "I'm very proud of the girls," said Georgia head coach Suzanne Yoculan. "They fought for every chance.  They did everything we asked them to do.  We wanted to have a better meet than SECs and we did. "I feel so much better going into the championships than I did after SECs.  I felt that even though we won (SECs) that we were flat in some places and I didn't want the team to get complacent knowing that they are number one in every event.  That could be a dangerous thought.  But they practiced hard this week and they came in here refocused to get a higher score and to make some corrections and they did that," Yoculan said.  Starting out on the floor exercise, Georgia took the lead with a team score of 49.375.  Tiffany Tolnay tied her career high with a 9.900 and Kelsey Ericksen followed with a 9.900.
On vault, Tolnay led the team with a 9.925.  Following close behind, Ericksen posted a 9.900 and Ashley Kupets scored 9.850.  The team moved to its third rotation with a team total of 49.325. Georgia's 98.725 after two events led the meet.
Courtney Kupets sited a 9.950 on the uneven bars to eep the Gym Dogs ahead with a team score of 49.325.  Ericksen and Nikki Childs both contributed a 9.875.
The Gym Dogs finished the night on beam with a score of 49.375 as all competitors scored a 9.825 or higher.  Katie Heenan tied her career high hitting a 9.950.  Courtney Kupets posted a 9.900 and Audrey Bowers set her career high with a 9.850.  Tolnay also scored a 9.850.
All-around results were due to the Gym Dogs. Following Ericksen's tie for first, Katie Heenan finished third with a total score of 39.450. Tiffany Tolnay placed fourth with a 39.425 and Courtney Kupets took fifth place with a 39.275. "It's definitely all about the team and so many of the individuals came through tonight.  Tonight was a meet about everybody in the lineup.  Every single person contributed to our team score.  I like to see everyone contributing," said Yoculan.
The undefeated Gym Dogs (26-0) will travel to Corvallis, Ore. April 20 to defend their National Championship. Meet Notes:
Along with Georgia, the University of Nebraska qualified for an automatic berth to the NCAA Championships with a team score of 196.350. It marks the 17th time in program history that Nebraska has qualified for nationals and will be their eighth consecutive appearance dating back to 1999. "We just feel good about tonight," said Nebraska head coach Dan Kendig. "We are thrilled about going to nationals and that means we had a good meet tonight. It was fun meet, and I'm happy to be going to nationals.
"As far as our chances in Oregon, nationals this year is Georgia's to lose. They're fit and athletic, and it was fun being here and seeing them."
Also making the trip to the NCAA championships will be all- arounders Adrianne Perry, a freshman from the University of Missouri, and Christine Robella, a junior from the University of North Carolina. Perry scored a 39.225 to become the 6th competitor in Missouri's history to qualify for nationals in the all-around. Robella scored a 39.275 to advance.

Gym Dogs Survive Auburn, 196.55-196.15
Georgia struggles on beam with three falls

AUBURN, Ala. --- The No. 1-ranked Gym Dogs raced out to a huge lead over Auburn on Friday night at Beard-Eaves-Memorial Coliseum, but three falls on the balance beam made Georgia's victory of 196.55 - 196.15 the narrowest in the history of the series.
"I'm not going to read into (the beam rotation) too much," said Georgia head coach Suzanne Yoculan. "I'm proud of the fact that our other three events were so strong. There are not many teams in the country that can fall three times on beam and still win. I don't want to focus on the negatives because I think it was a fluke.
"To have Katie (Heenan) and Courtney (Kupets) anchor us with 9.9s the way they did says a lot for them," Yoculan said.
Courtney Kupets earned the win in the all-around competition with a career-high 39.675 and Heenan was second with her season best of 39.475.
Georgia (12-0, 5-0) opened the meet with the nation's top score on bars this season at 49.475. Georgia finds strength on beam to survive Crimson Tide
Feb. 10, 2006

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. --- The top-ranked Georgia Gym Dogs survived their closest meet of the year with a win over No. 3 Alabama, 196.625 - 196.575, in front of 14,263 at Coleman Coliseum on Friday night. "I was impressed with our performance on beam," said Georgia head coach Suzanne Yoculan. "It was just like last year at the national championships when we stuck with a plan and had a belief we would win the competition. It was tough going over to beam with the home team on floor, and Alabama is outstanding on floor." The Gym Dogs posted just two 9.9s on the night, both coming from the all-around winner Courtney Kupets on vault and beam. Her all-around score of 39.475 tied her career high career high from the home Maryland meet on Jan. 14.

No. 1 Gym Dogs Earn 196.125-193.600 Win over No. 24 Arkansas

ATHENS, Ga. --- The No. 1-ranked Georgia Gym Dogs earned their second consecutive home victory on Saturday after posting a 196.125-193.600 win over the No. 24-ranked Arkansas Lady Backs in front of 9,154 fans at Stegeman Coliseum.
"We started out on fire on vault but we were disappointed with our bar performance," said Georgia head coach Suzanne Yoculan. "Usually competitions are all about momentum, so I'm really surprised we had so many problems on balance beam and on the uneven bars tonight. But I'm excited that we did so well on one event. Floor exercise was good again, even without one of our strongest floor performers Courtney Kupets. We had two events that went really well and two events that we definitely have to do a lot more work in."
Led by Katie Heenan's career high of 9.975, the Gym Dogs vaulted to a 49.550-48.450 lead after the first rotation. Courtney Kupets tallied a career high with a 9.925, while Ashley Kupets followed suit with a 9.925 as well. Georgia's 49.550 on vault marked the highest score in the event since the Bulldogs' 49.575 at last season's NCAA Super Six.

Courtney Kupets paced the Gym Dogs with a 39.475 in the individual all-around competition while Katie Heenan contributed a 39.375.
"We had a lot of ups and downs today," said Georgia head coach Suzanne Yoculan. "We had some 9.9s and some low scores. You could tell it was the beginning of the season. The landings are still difficult and they do not have the confidence that they need to have. But that's just because it's the beginning of the season. Today's performance was a significant improvement from last week."

Gym Dogs Win Season Opener

Katie Heenan wins the all-around

CANCUN, Mexico---The No. 1-ranked Gym Dogs knocked off four teams and placed first in the Third Annual Cancun Classic at the Moon Palace Resort on Friday night with a 195.7. No. 9 Stanford was second at 194.95. No. 21 Denver finished third at 193.85, followed by No. 10 Oklahoma (193.325) and No. 17 Arizona (192.925). "The scores were low tonight but the competition was intense," said Georgia head coach Suzanne Yoculan. "This meet had some of the top kids in the country, and I think Stanford will be one of the top three teams at the end of the year."
Georgia lost just one gymnast off of last year's national championship team, but the lineup introduced several new competitors as 10 of the routines were performed by rookies. Four true freshmen (Courtney Kupets, Tiffany Tolnay, Paige Burns, Abby Stack) and redshirt sophomore Adrienne Dishman all made their first-career appearances for the Gym Dogs.
"We're proud how (the newcomers) competed. They adjusted and performed better than I expected for the first meet of the season. The freshmen competed like veterans already. I was happy to see that Tiffany bounced back for our highest score on beam after a fall on bars," Yoculan said.
Sophomore Katie Heenan earned the victory in the all-around with a 39.25 and Courtney Kupets was second with a 39.225.
"Tonight you saw the grace of an upperclassman in Katie's routines. That was the difference for her. To me, it's like Courtney is starting over. It's different competing in college than on the international level. But it speaks well for Courtney to preform this well in her first college meet," said Yoculan.
Georgia's 48.925 on vault set a meet record. Tolnay led the Gym Dogs with a 9.875 while Ashley and Courtney Kupets each had a 9.8. Heenan notched a 9.75 and Dishman had a 9.7 in her first official competition in three years at Georgia.
On bars the Gym Dogs finished with a 48.8. Courtney Kupets scored a 9.85 to lead all Georgia gymnasts. Heenan was right behind at 9.8 and Ashley Kupets finished at 9.775. Burns and Audrey Bowers added a 9.7 and 9.675, respectively.
The beam rotation was Georgia's lowest score of the evening at 48.575. Tolnay had a team-high 9.775 and Heenan (9.75) and Nikki Childs (9.7) were the only other Gym Dogs above 9.7.
The 49.4 team score on the floor exercise by the Gym Dogs also set a meet record. Heenan anchored Georgia's rotation with a 9.95, the highest mark of the night. Courtney Kupets had a 9.9 and Bowers, Childs, Stack and Brittany Smith all scored 9.85s.
